Installing Pulse Secure on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux Computers

Note: the installation requires administrator rights. If you are working on an LSE-owned computer without admin rights and you need the Pulse client to be installed, contact the IMT Service Desk (020 7955 5000 or  it.servicedesk@lse.ac.uk).

 

Follow the steps below to install and use Pulse on a Windows-based PC or laptop: 

1. Download from here:

• 32-bit
• 64-bit

If you don’t know how to tell whether your Windows PC is 32 or 64-bit, one way to tell is that 64-bit windows has a "c:\program files (x86)" folder as well as a "c:\program files” one.

 

If you get a warning message as the on below, click OK.

 

 

2. Click Run. 

 

 

The Pulse Secure Setup Wizard  opens.

 

 

 

3. Click Next.

 

4. If you are asked to choose between a Typical and a Custom installation, choose Typical. 

 

 

5. Click Install. When the Wizard completes the installation, you will see this window.

 

 

 

6. Click Finish.

 

 

7. Following installation, a new icon appears in your Taskbar.

 

 

 

8. Click on it, then Open Pulse.

 

9. Click the Plus button to add a new VPN connection.

 

 

The Add Connection window will open.

 

 

10. In the Name: field type LSE VPN.

 

11. In the Server URL: field type remote.lse.ac.uk/pulse.

 

12. Click Add. You will see the LSE VPN connection.

 

 

13. Click Connect. You will be asked to authenticate with your LSE username and password.

 

 

You should see a green tick if successful.

 

 

14. To disconnect from the VPN session, click on the Junos Pulse Taskbar icon, select LSE VPN and click Disconnect.

 

 

 

You can select one of three available installation options: (1) automatic install (for Macs with LSE Self Service installed), (2) a LSE customised installer or (3) the Pulse standard installer that requires manual configuration.

 

1.   Automatic Install using LSE Self Service: If you are using a LSE Mac that has the LSE Self Service application installed you can click on this link to install automatically. You will not be asked for an administrator password and the software will be installed and configured automatically.

 

2.   LSE Customised installer: If you are using your personal Mac you can download and install the customised installer from here. You must have local administrator rights on your Mac.

 

             i.        Open the downloaded file named: PulseSecure5.2.5(CustomForLSE).pkg from your Downloads Folder. Follow the Installer.app instructions and enter your admin credentials when prompted. The install path is: Macintosh HD/Applications/Junos Pulse.app

 

            ii.        Upon installation the software will launch automatically and the Pulse Secure icon will appear in the Menu Bar.

 

           iii.        Click on the Pulse Secure icon from the Menu Bar and select LSE VPN > Connect. You will be asked for your LSE username and password.

 

 

iv.        To terminate the session, select: LSE VPN > Disconnect

 

3.   Pulse Secure standard installer: This installer needs to be configured manually and you must have local administrator rights on your Mac. You can download the installer from this link.

 

             i.        Open the downloaded file named: JunosPulse.dmg from your Downloads Folder. A virtual disk containing the installer will mount on your Desktop.

 

            ii.        Open the mounted disk and double-click on the package called JunosPulse.pkg to launch the installer.

 

           iii.        Follow the Installer.app instructions and enter your admin credentials when prompted. The install path is: Macintosh HD/Applications/Junos Pulse.app

 

          iv.        Upon installation the software will launch automatically and the Pulse Secure icon will appear in the Menu Bar.

 

           v.        Click on the Pulse Secure icon from the Menu Bar and select Open Pulse Secure. This will launch the application and open the connections window.

 

vi.        Click on the + icon in the lower left corner to add a new VPN connection.

 

a.   In the Name field type: LSE VPN

b.   In the Server URL field type: remote.lse.ac.uk/pulse

c.   Click on the Add button to add this connection.

 

vii.        Click Connect. You will be asked to authenticate with your LSE username and password.

           

viii.        To disconnect from the VPN session, click on the Junos Pulse Menu Bar icon, select LSE VPN and click Disconnect.
