Introduction
This guide describes how to configure your Windows XP computer to access eduroam via the LSE wireless network on campus. This service offers users visiting participating institutions to access network resources using the logon credentials from their own institution. For further information, see eduroam|.
Requirements
You must have at least Windows XP Service Pack 2 security patches installed to be able to connect to the wireless network. You must also have a wireless adapter.
Users are required to install and regularly update antivirus software.
Configuration
Some wireless network adapters are often bundled with software from the manufacturer; you will need to disable this software and use Microsoft's built-in configuration tool instead.
To configure your wireless connection using Microsoft's built-in configuration tool:

Locate an area with a good wireless signal using the LSE Wireless map

Click Start | Run

Type services.msc and click OK

In the Services dialog box, scroll down and double-click Wireless Zero Configuration

From the Startup type drop-down list, select Automatic

Under Service status, click Start
-
Click OK
-
Click Start | Control Panel | Network Connections
-
Right-click your Wireless Network Connection icon and select Properties

Ensure that Show icon in notification area when connected is ticked

Select the Wireless Networks tab
-
Tick Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings
-
Click Add
-
In the Network name {SSID}: textbox, enter eduroam
-
From the Network Authentication drop-down list, select WPA
-
From the Data Encryption drop-down list, select AES
-
Ensure that This is a computer-to-computer.....access points are not used is unticked
-
Select the Authentication tab
-
Ensure that Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network is ticked

From the EA type drop-down list, select Protected EAP (PEAP)
-
Untick Authenticate as computer when computer information is available
-
Ensure that Authenticate as guest when user or computer information is unavailable is unticked

Click Properties
-
Tick Validate server certificate
-
In the Connect to these servers: box, enter eduroam.lse.ac.uk
-
Under Trusted Root Certification Authorities:, tick GlobalSign Root CA

Select Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)

Click Configure
-
Untick Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any)

Click OK 4 times to close the active dialog boxes

Close the Network Connections window

In the system tray, click on the balloon prompting you for a certificate

When prompted, enter the following information:
Username: Your LSE email address: e.g. j.bloggs@lse.ac.uk
Password: Your LSE network password
Click OK

Once you're connected, test your connection using your Internet browser by opening the LSE website at http://www.lse.ac.uk
Troubleshooting
If you experience problems connecting the wireless network, apply the following DHCP settings to your wireless connection.
To change DHCP settings:
1. Click Start | Control Panel | Network Connections
2. Right-click your Wireless Network Connection icon and select Properties
3. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties
4. Make a note of your IP address and DNS server address
5. Select Obtain IP address automatically
6. Select Obtain DNS server address automatically
7. Click OK | Close
Most computers are configured to join a Local Area Network by default, but should you experience problems due to broadband or dial-up settings, check Internet Options Connection settings.
To change Internet Options Connection settings:
1. Click Start | Control Panel | Network Connections
2. Double click Internet Options
3. Select Connections tab
4. Select Dial whenever a network connection is not present
5. Click LAN Settings
6. Tick Automatically detect settings
7. Untick any other options
If you receive a 'Duplicate name exists on the network' error, you will need to change the computer name.
To change the computer name:
1. Log on as an Administrator if necessary
2. Click Start | Control Panel | System
3. Select Computer Name tab
4. Click Change
5. Enter T-USERNAME as your computer name (your LSE network username)
6. Click OK
7. Restart your computer
