Connecting to a School Printer using Windows XP

Introduction

This document describes how to configure a Windows 2000/XP computer to print to black and white printers on the School network. Before starting, make sure you are connected to the LSE network. It is recommended that you test your connection by opening www.lse.ac.uk| on your Internet browser

Configuration

  1. Click Start | (Settings) | Control Panel | Printers

  2. Double click Add printer

  3. Ensure that LPT2: is selected and click Next

  4. Select HP in the Manufacturer pane and HP Laserjet 4000 PCL in the printers pane and click Next

  5. Select Yes if you want to use the printer as the default printer and click Next

  6. Select No unless you want to print a test page

  7. Click Next | Finish

  8. Now click here to download Printmap.exe. Either select Run from present location or save it to your regular download directory and run it from there.

  9. Enter your LSE username and click All public printers.
    A command prompt window will appear.

  1. You may be prompted for a password, if so enter your LSE password and press Enter.
    The 'command is successfully completed' message confirms that the queue has been mapped.
  2. Press any key to close the prompt window, then close the print queue mapper.
  3. When printing your document, click on File | Print and select the new printer from the drop-down printer list.

Troubleshooting

Password error: For security reasons, your password is not displayed when you type it at the password prompt. Please input the correct password and press Enter.

Network path not found: Please check that your network connection is working or your cable is plugged in.

Mapping the printer queue manually: Advanced users may prefer to map the printer queue manually, as follows:

  1. Click StartRun.
  2. Enter cmd and click OK
  3. At the prompt, enter

NET USE LPT2 \\PRINT1\PRPCQ /USER:LSE\yourLSEUSERNAME - All public rooms
NET USE LPT2 /DELETE  - Remove

  1. Enter your LSE password when prompted

When printing your document, click on File | Print and select the new printer from the drop-down printer list.
