Configuring email for Blackberry mobiles

Introduction

This document explains how to configure a Blackberry mobile to receive email from your LSE email account.

Security Information

By connecting to the Exchange server, you give LSE access to control certain features of your phone. This includes being able to remotely wipe the device and monitor failed password attempts to lock the phone.

Please note that this is a standard feature of the Exchange service, has always been in place and is true for every mobile phone. Although Android phones warn users of this security setting, other mobile devices don't.

You should be aware that LSE IMT has no desire or interest in accessing any of these features, and will not do so without the express request of the user (e.g. if you mobile phone is lost or stolen, we can wipe the phone's contents for you).

We cannot remove this functionality from the Exchange service (Microsoft would have to do that); it is a standard feature.

Requirements

You will require a Blackberry mobile phone with a connection to your mobile network provider's data connection, or a wireless internet connection. You will also require your Blackberry Service username and password as provided by or set-up through your mobile network provider. Please check your mobile network provider's data usage charges that may be incurred in the UK and abroad if you intend to use the mobile providers data connection.

Please note: The process to configure email on your Blackberry mobile may vary slightly according to your mobile network provider but the information below will provide you with enough information to add the LSE email account to your Blackberry service.

To configure your Blackberry mobile phone:

  1. From the Home Menu select the Setup icon

  2. Select the Email Settings icon

  3. Enter your Blackberry Service username and password as provided by your mobile network provider

  4. Select Add an existing email account and click Add

  5. Select Other and click Next

  6. Enter your LSE email address and LSE network account password and click Next

    Please note:
    At this point the set-up process will usually fail in its attempt to automatically set up your email account

  7. Scroll down and select I will provide the settings to add this email account and click Next

  8. Select This is my work email account and click Next

  9. Select I will provide the settings to add this email account and click Next

  10. In the User name field enter 'lse\username\mail.alias' (i.e. lse\bloggs\j.bloggs)
  11. In the Email server field enter 'exchange.lse.ac.uk' and click 'Next'

  12. The Blackberry Service will confirm via SMS text that the account has been activated and will begin synchronising the email account in 20 minutes
