Connect a Mac OS X computer to the LSE network from an LSE Plug-in Point


This document describes how to configure an Apple Mac OS X computer to connect to the LSE Network. To gain access to sites outside the LSE network from halls of residence you are required to register your computer|. From campus you are required to log into the web redirect. All users are required to install and regularly update Antivirus Software|.

Connect to the network:

Connect the LAN cable to a working network point and switch on the computer. If you want to connect to the network or to the Internet, you are advised to set up a network connection. Settings for different network connections can be saved in "locations".

Make a new location:

  1. Click on the Apple icon in the upper left-hand corner of the screen and select System Preferences


  2. When the System Preferences window appears, click on the Network icon

  3. From the Location drop-down menu select New Location, in the Name your new location text box type LSE Wired network and click OK
  4. From the Show drop-down box select Network Port Configurations
  5. Tick the checkbox Built-in-Ethernet, deselect all other checkboxes and click Apply Now

  6. From the Show drop-down box select Built-in-Ethernet
  7. Click on the TCP/IP tab
  8. Select Using DHCP from the Configure IPv4 drop-down list  
  9. Click Apply Now and press the Apple key and the Q key together to quit System Preferences

  10. Test your new location by opening the LSE web site at http://www.lse.ac.uk

Switching between Locations

Mac OS X allows you to save a number of network configurations (locations) in the System Preferences. To switch between these locations simply click on the Apple icon in the upper left-hand of the screen, then click on the Location drop-down menu and select the configuration you wish to use.

Halls of Residence Registration

When you first connect to the LSE network from Halls you will be given access to the LSE domain only. In order to access sites outside the LSE it is necessary to register the network card in your computer with the Hall server and install Antivirus software.
