LSE Health and Social Care - New Collaboration

LSE Health and Social Care (LSE HSC) will embark on a new collaboration with the Research Department of Social Development at the Development Research Center (DRC) of the State Council of China. The research project, which will involve annual conferences and workshops in Beijing and London, will examine pharmaceutical policy and regulation in China. The project aims to provide policy-makers in China with an international comparative perspective on best practices on pharmaceutical regulation, with recommendations, which could then be adopted in the Chinese health system.

LSE Health and Social Care has recently increased its engagement with China, as the country undertakes massive reforms to its health system. A dedicated visiting scholars programme was launched in 2012 for health experts in China to spend 6 to 9 months at LSE Health and Social Care. Initial scholars from China, arriving in 2013, are looking at practices in the NHS in England and other health systems in Europe on health promotion and safety on child-birth; hospital administration and financing and fee-payment systems.

LSE HSC's new collaborative project in China, starting in 2014, will bring together LSE's experienced health experts with China's top health reformers and thinkers, working on the major challenges for change on health policy and practice for the country of over 1.3bn people. The DRC is a highly influential state agency, responsible for policy research, strategic review and advising on economic and social developments in China. The agency recommends policies to the State Council of China.

The collaboration is kindly supported by the Shanghai Medical Innovation & Development Foundation.
