One of the most popular graduate destinations for LSE students, banking and investment professionals aim to make profit for firms, governments and wealthy individuals through the financial markets. It is a highly competitive market, but there are opportunities within large, midsize and boutique companies.
Banking and investment employers value students who have gained an internship or some relevant work experience. Within the major banks and financial services institutions the majority of internship positions translate to offers of permanent graduate contracts.
Typically a graduate training contract will last three years, and you would study towards professional qualifications while working. Mid-size or boutique firms offer graduate schemes rarely, so students would be advised to apply for their trainee or analyst positions which tend to be advertised as and when the business needs require it.
Salaries can be extremely high - particularly with bonuses - though the hours can be long and the environment is highly pressurised.
You do not need a related degree, but should be able to demonstrate numeracy, analytical ability, communication skills, and the ability to work well under pressure.
