Investment fund manager

Use information produced by investment analysts to make financial decisions about buying, selling and capitalising on shares, bonds, property, commodities, equities and trusts. They liaise with company managers (whether in house or working for a client) to discuss options. They also conduct research and analyse complex financial reports and information and maintain their sector knowledge through market studies. Positions can be entered by students with 2:1 or above.

Analysts/ Research assistants

Research and analyse information about companies and financial options to present to fund managers and associates to help make informed decisions for clients. They will also create effective models and conduct administrative tasks. They may specialise by type of security, region or industry. They differ to analysts at an investment bank as they concentrate on investment analysis for the firm, whereas in an investment bank they would create detailed reports to inform the buy side and the client.

Portfolio manager assistants

Answerable to the portfolio manager the assistant is responsible for assessing potential investments and ensuring the stability of the portfolio, liaising with clients whilst supporting the portfolio manager.

Portfolio manager

Investing money on behalf of their clients, the portfolio manager will use the information and research conducted by their assistant or an analyst to make informed investment decisions. This is a buy-side position. They will generally have a degree such as an MBA or PhD. Some asset management firms may consider masters students with experience.
