Centre for International Studies Research Support

Current and incoming visitors to the Centre for International Studies (CIS) may apply to the CIS for modest funding that is directly related to their research. In the application/s, examples of the contributions that the Fellow intends to make to the CIS, its participating departments, and the School more generally during their time at the Centre should be specified.

Research workshops, conferences and external grant applications may need to be organised in advance of your fellowship. We strongly encourage applications in collaboration with permanent members of faculty in the departments that participate in CIS (see Staff page).

All applications for funding should be received by one of the following two deadlines, depending on the type of funds you wish to receive:

  • The deadline for CIS Research-Related Funding or CIS Research Seed Grant has now passed. Dates for the 2017-18 academic year will be announced in due course.
  • 14 October 2016 for CIS Event Grant (download the CIS Event Grant application).

Please send your completed applications to cis@lse.ac.uk.

The categories are explained in further detail below. If you have any questions, please contact the CIS Director, Professor Christopher Coker.

CIS Research-Related Funding

This can fund research-related travel (for instance conference attendance or fieldwork) or other expenses that are not covered by your own funds. Grants will normally be around £500-£1,000. Appropriate funds up to a maximum of £1200 will be awarded for attendance at non-European conferences and up to a maximum of £750 for attendance at European conferences.

CIS Research Seed Grant

This can be used as a platform to make larger grant applications to external funding bodies during your tenure as a CIS Fellow. Seed Grants will usually be around £1,000. Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply in collaboration with permanent members of LSE faculty. All applicants must have been in contact with the LSE Research Division prior to making an application, and provide on the application form the name of the Research Development Manager who has assisted them.

CIS Event Grant

This can be used to fund your organisation of a conference, workshop, roundtable or seminar/s on a theme related to your research. Please contact Sophie Wise for assistance in working out budgets for events held at the LSE.

Applications for External Funding

A Visiting Fellow/ Professor appointment also enables individuals who are not part of the School’s full-time academic staff to apply for external research funding in their own name and using the School’s name (subject to the support of the Director of the Centre, and with the approval of the Fellow’s own institution).

If you intend to apply for external funding while a Fellow at the CIS, you need to discuss this with the LSE Research Division at least a month ahead of the funder’s application deadline.

Visiting Appointees Applicants intending to submit proposals for external funding prior to coming to the Centre are required to discuss their plans with the School’s Research Division (RD) prior to the School’s consideration of their case for a Visiting Fellowship. Note it can take up to 9 months between the deadline for applications for external funding and the announcement of results by the funder.

All customary research funding processes must be followed. Applicants would be expected to cover their own salary costs by building this into the application. Should an application be successful, with the applicant’s salary and payroll costs built into the award, then the appointment process and issue of a School contract would be processed through the School’s Human Resources Division, subject to the School’s employment rules and regulations. The applicant’s suitability for subsequent appointment to the senior research staff would be considered in the usual way by a School selection committee, should this be relevant.
