Research and Publications

My research will aim to present a new theory of Western informal empire and use it to analyse, compare, and contrast British and French diplomatic, economic, and military policy in Japan from the opening of Western trade relations in 1858 until the aftermath of the Meiji Restoration in 1869.
General research interests include modern Asian history, Japan and China in the nineteenth century, the Pacific War, British and French imperialism and the Second French Empire.
