Visiting Fellowships Application Process

The Department of International History welcomes applications for Fellowships funded or part-funded by bodies such as the British Academy, the Leverhulme Trust, the Marie Curie Fellowship scheme and others.

If the Fellowship you wish to apply for involves a member of staff in the host department assuming a mentor/supervisor role, please contact an appropriate member of staff directly in the first instance to seek his or her support. Full details of our staff can be found in our Who's Who section.

In securing the support of an individual member of staff, s/he will ask you to provide the necessary information so that s/he may present your application to the Departmental Research Committee; this will usually be your Curriculum Vitae and a Research Proposal. If the Committee supports your application the Department will be happy to host you, subject to School confirmation, as a Fellow in the event of your application being successful with the external body in question.

If the Fellowship you wish to apply for does not involve a member of departmental staff acting in a mentor/supervisor role, please contact Mr Mathew Betts, Research Committee Officer, in the first instance. There are two application rounds per academic session. Applications for Fellowships commencing in session 2017/18 must be submitted to the department by the following deadlines:

  • Round 1 deadline: 10th November 2016
  • Round 2 deadline: 9th February 2017

You may of course need to submit your application well before these dates in order to secure departmental approval prior to meeting application deadlines set by the external body in question. We will endeavour to relay a decision on your application to you promptly where you indicate that there is an impending deadline set by an external body, but please do give us at least one week to consider your application.

There is no guarantee that applications received after these dates will be considered or supported by the Departmental Research Committee.

LSE's Visiting Fellowship scheme is an internal scheme by which Departments, Institutes and Centres may host staff who are either practitioners or academics in other institutions to conduct research.

In-post Details

The typical duration of a Visiting Fellowship in the Department of International History is one year, from 1st September until 31st August.

The post is unremunerated. Office space and secretarial support are not provided to post-holders.There are no teaching or supervision duties attached to this post.

Applicants must give one research paper during the period of their Fellowship, either as part of the Department of International History’s Staff Research Seminar, or by other arrangement.

Application Process

There are two application rounds for International History Visiting Fellowships per academic session. Applications for session 2017/18, as described below, must be submitted by the following deadlines:

  • Round 1 deadline: 10th November 2016
  • Round 2 deadline: 9th February 2017

There is no guarantee that applications received after these dates will be considered or supported by the Departmental Research Committee.

Please send a Curriculum Vitae and Research Statement to Mr Mathew Betts, Research Committee Officer in the Department of International History, via e-mail.

The Research Statement should include:

  • The proposed period of the Fellowship
  • An overview of your project and its originality
  • The specific research activities you intend to undertake during the period and the projected outcomes
  • Reasons why the Department of International History is an appropriate host for you and your research and why you specifically need to be in London to conduct your research during the period
  • Details of any funding you are seeking, or have secured, from external sources for the Fellowship period.

Your application will first be considered by the Departmental Research Committee. If you gain the support of the Departmental Research Committee, you will be notified and your application will then be progressed to LSE’s Visiting Appointments Committee. If your application is successful at this stage you will be contacted by LSE Human Resources for further personal details and confirmation, and an appointment letter will be provided.

* Please note that LSE Teaching Fellow posts are advertised separately on the Jobs section.

Applications to the Visiting Fellowship are only open to post-doctoral researchers or equivalent. The scheme is not open to PhD students.

At present applications can only be considered from those who already have (or expect to have) adequate financial support. The Department does not provide Visiting Fellows with a research allowance. The School is not able to make any arrangements for living accommodation for visitors, either.
