Welcome to the International History Department. The Department is unique in the international focus of its research and teaching and has been recognised in UK and internationally as one of the of the leading history departments in the UK. We think we provide an exceptional experience for all our students.
We are a truly international department. We have about 300 students in the Department who come from over 30 different countries. They include undergraduates on our BA History and on our joint degree with International Relations , general course students, Masters students and research students. My colleagues are also international – both in the countries they come from, and where they have studied, but also in their areas of historical interest. We offer both introductory and specialised courses on almost all parts of the world, including the Americas, Africa and Asia as well as Europe, and we have a particular interest in exploring large, international, themes, such as the causes of conflict, the rise of nations and nationalism, cultural and religious interaction, imperialism and colonialism, and the history of international relations.
We have a vibrant research culture, including holding a lively series of seminars which give our PhD students the opportunity to share their research. We are committed to excellence in teaching and are proud of our high teaching scores in the NSS. We have a lively student run History Society and provide a friendly and inclusive environment in which you can pursue all your historical interests.
More details of all our teaching programmes, our research interests and FAQs can be found on this website. I hope you find the website helpful.
