Chevening Scholarships for International Development

What are Chevening Scholarships?

Chevening Scholarships are the UK government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations. The Scholarships are awarded to outstanding scholars with leadership potential. Awards are typically for a one-year Master’s degree.

Who can apply for a Chevening Scholarship?

Chevening Scholarships are for talented people who have been identified as potential future leaders across a wide range of fields, including politics, business, the media, civil society, religion, and academia. Applicants should be high calibre graduates with the personal, intellectual and interpersonal qualities necessary for leadership. Chevening Scholars come from over 110 countries worldwide (excluding the USA and the EU), and this year the Scholarships will support approximately 700 individuals. There are over 41,000 Chevening alumni around the world who together comprise an influential and highly regarded global network.

Orientation meeting

All Chevening students in the UK are invited to a reception at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

During the School's Induction week, each department at the LSE hosts a reception for all the new students and the International Development's reception for the upcoming academic year will be held on Thursday 24th September (see full schedule)

As Chevening students are from all parts of the globe we feel it is important that you get to know one another early in the academic year. International Development may hold a separate reception during the early weeks of Michaelmas term specifically for International Development British Council students (numbers permitting). Could all Chevening students make themselves known to the office during the first week of term.

Cumberland Lodge

Every year International Development offers students the opportunity to attend a series of workshops at Cumberland Lodge in Great Windsor Park. Each workshop is designed by International Development academic staff and addresses a particular issue which is relevant to each programme.

Attending one of the International Development workshops is a wonderful opportunity to explore and discuss matters of common concern in an informal and relaxed environment. Spaces are limited but Chevening students can use their travel fund to apply for a place at one of the workshops.

Accommodation in London

Aside from the course you are taking at the School, the most important aspect of your time in London is likely to be the place in which you live. The information on the LSE's Accommodation Office website is designed to give you an idea of the range of residences, both LSE and Intercollegiate (University of London) and private housing options available.

Some Chevening scholars stay at private resident halls in London, such as Goodenough College and the International Student Hall. The British Council website also provides useful information about living in the UK for international students new to the UK.
