Programme Director: Dr. Rajesh Venugopal
This course provides students with an academically rigorous post-graduate-level inter-disciplinary training in the fields of international development and humanitarianism. The course involves a practical component with exposure to the ‘real world’ of organisations and practitioners. Students who take this course go on to work in the development or humanitarianism sectors in NGOs, policy think-tanks, governments, or international organizations.
The programme consists of required core courses in development studies and humanitarianism, together with a team-based ‘live’ consultancy project for a client in the development or humanitarian sector. Students go on to choose 1.5 optional units from a wide range of courses within the School.
At the end of the course students write a 10,000 dissertation. The flexibility of dissertation topics allows students a further opportunity to shape their studies to meet their own intellectual and career objectives.
We will consider applicants with a background in any subject, although a first degree in a social science or humanities subject would be an advantage. As the programme requires intensive reading across a broad range of literature drawn from various social science disciplines students must have a high proficiency in the English language to perform well.
