Anti-imperialism Trumps Human Rights: South Africa's Approach to the Darfur Conflict

This paper emphasises the anti-imperialist character of South Africa's foreign policy, which colours and sometimes overrides the commitment to human rights and democracy. The author contents that those who are surprised by Pretoria's apparent appeasement of dictatorial regimes have failed to grasp the hisitory and ideology of the ruling party, the African National Congress, and mistakenly view South Africa as akin to Western countries beceause of its liberal constitution, democratic politics and urbane leadership.
