The event will explore the recent changes in European politics, changes taking place at the EU and national levels and generated by new political parties and movements. Particularly, the event will explore the potential changes brought to the composition of the European Parliament by the elections taking place in May 2019. The speaker will also discuss political changes taking place in recent years in Central and Eastern European countries, with a special focus on the case of Romania, one of the largest countries in the CEE.
Dacian Cioloş (@ciolosdacian) was Prime Minister of Romania between November 2015 and January 2017. He was nominated for this role by President Klaus Iohannis and he assumed office after receiving parliamentary approval. Previously, Dacian Cioloş held several key positions in the field of agriculture in Romania, France or EU structures, including that of Agriculture Minister of Romania from October 2007 to December 2008.
In November 2009, European Commission President José Manuel Barroso nominated him to be the next Agriculture Commissioner, a post he assumed in February 2010 and held until his term expired in November 2014. In July 2015, Barroso’s successor Jean-Claude Juncker named Cioloş his special adviser on international food security. Cioloş is the leader of the Freedom, Unity and Solidarity Party.
