Only Half the Story: legal protection of unaccompanied migrant and refugee young people

Page Contents >

Speakers: Dr Kathryn Cronin and Baljeet Sandhu
Chair: Dr Jenny Kuper
Date: Tuesday 15 March 2016, 6.30pm-8.00pm
Venue: Venue: CLM.3.02 (Clement House)
The talk will address some of the hugely topical issues facing unaccompanied asylum seeking children (i.e. children travelling without their families) - their journeys into and through Europe; the trafficking and exploitation of such children in debt bondage situations; the positive protection obligations on governments and their failures to find the 'durable solutions' required for such children. The speakers will also present the findings of their recent report for the Law Centres Network, based on a review of the processing and decision-making in the cases of unaccompanied children represented by Law Centres across the UK, including a look at the key findings on lawyer's practice, the ethical issues raised in their representation of these children and the children's experiences of immigration and care procedures following their arrival to the UK. One young person's advice for service providers and decision-makers to 'put yourselves in our shoes' - was adopted as the title for their joint report.

We would like to make the lecture as relevant as possible to your interests and therefore invite you to collaborate in designing the evening with us by contributing questions inadvance to us using this link:bit.ly/LSEChildRights
