You might be forgiven for thinking that today’s announcement of how the science budget will be divided up is good news.

The chair of Research Councils UK, Alan Thorpe, says: “It is very encouraging that the allocations to the Research Councils have fared so well.”

In fact it confirms that the government is planning to slash capital expenditure for research, as I warned a few weeks ago.
