I hold an MA in Political Science and BA in European Studies from the University of Warsaw in Poland. After coming to the LSE I have obtained an MRes in Political Science with an emphasis on qualitative research methods. Currently I am a PhD candidate at the Government Department supervised by Professor Christian List and Dr Laura Valentini. In the meantime, I also work as a research assistant in various academic and private sector projects.

Thesis

Deliberative democracy and mega-cities

The aim of the PhD project is to analyse whether or not deliberative democracy is conceptually possible, normatively desirable and prima facie feasible to be applied in mega-cities (defined as inhabited by more than 10 million people). Mega-cities are growing mostly in developing countries, and have dynamic, young but largely unequal populations. Deliberative democracy is a desirable method of decision-making in these cities as it enables those unprivileged members of the society to make their voices heard. However, there are several problems in applying deliberative democracy in mega-cities. Mega-cities are large and it is impossible to include all inhabitants in a deliberative forum. Due to high cultural and economic diversity it is difficult to include all perspectives and claims in the decision-making process. Social issues in mega-cities are complex, implying that the decision-making process requires more time and resources. My thesis aims to analyse whether it is possible to overcome those problems and apply deliberative democracy in mega-cities.
