'May The Best Man Lose. Why Political Parties May Choose Electoral Failure'
I am working on formal models of electoral competition, in order to analyse how ideology influences parties’ strategic behaviour. Specifically, I aim at understanding under which circumstances political parties may choose to lose elections, due to ideological considerations. In doing so, I propose a definition of political motivation that takes into account the expressive component of ideology. My first paper looks at a static model of electoral competition between parties considered as unitary actors. My second and third papers will extend the analysis, in order to account for intra-party dynamics and investigate the potential role of political persuasion when elections are considered as a repeated game.
