'Why Don’t They Fight? The Emergence and Persistence of Nonviolent Secessionist MovementsIn the North and Horn of Africa'

Desiree’s research investigates the links between separatist movements’ lobbying efforts in the international realm and strategy choices in their conflict with the state. In doing so, she seeks to understand first why separatist movements construct certain ‘marketing packages’ to promote their cause abroad, and then to uncover links between their basis of international support and constraints on their use of violence. Specifically, her research will focus on the strategic decision-making processes through elite-level interviews with members of separatist groups in the Western Sahara, Somaliland, and South Sudan.
