This project has been conducted over several years and is coming to an end. Several articles have been published and are in preparation, but the main output of the project is a book nearing completion and provisionally entitled: 'Global Policy: Power, Governance and Accountability'.
The book:
-
provides an overview of statecentric and polycentric approaches to studying global policy;
-
identifies the core dimensions of global policy processes;
-
analyses the key features of, and interaction between, global policy-making entities ("global polities");
-
provides a conceptualization of accountability in the context of global policies;
-
develops a democratic standard for the assessment of the various dimensions of global policy processes;
-
applies those concepts and standard to eight instances of global policy making:
(i) the world-wide eradication of poliomyelitis;
(ii) the alert and response system for outbreaks of infectious diseases;
(iii) the fight against AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis;
(iv) the creation of international food safety standards, (v) child labour activities of the International Labour Organization;
(vi) non-child labour certification by the Rugmark transnational network;
(vii) labour standard promotion by the Fair Labor Organization, and
(viii) transnational commercial arbitration.
