Eric joined the Department of Geography and Environment in 1998, having been an academic assistant at the Centre for Law and Economics at the University of Saarbrücken, Germany.

An economist by training, he is the co-editor of the Handbook of Sustainable Development (with Giles Atkinson and Simon Dietz. Edward Elgar, Second Revised Edition 2014), the author of Robustness Tests for Quantitative Research (with Thomas Plümper), Cambridge University Press (forthcoming), Weak versus Strong Sustainability: Exploring the Limits of Two Opposing Paradigms (Edward Elgar, 1999; Second Revised Edition 2003; Third Revised Edition 2010; Fourth Revised Edition 2014), Greening Trade and Investment: Environmental Protection Without Protectionism (Earthscan, 2001) and The Pattern of Aid Giving - the impact of good governance on development assistance (Routledge 2003), as well as numerous journal articles.

His teaching focuses on neoclassical environmental and ecological economics.

Head of Geography Department promoted to senior position at LSE

Professor Eric Neumayer, Head of the Department of Geography and Environment, has been appointed as the Vice-Chair of the Appointments Committee at LSE.

Professor Craig Calhoun, Director of LSE, said "Eric, has been a fine department head and shown a great deal of wisdom and insight. I very much look forward to working with him." Read more.

Journal names LSE academic’s article one of the best in its 40-year history

The European Journal of Political Research has selected a research article by Thomas Plümper and Eric Neumayer as one of the best it has ever published.

The article, ‘Model Specification in the Analysis of Spatial Dependence’, was one of only 7 articles in total to be recognized. The award was given at a special session at the European Consortium for Political Research Conference in September 2013 in Bordeaux. The journal has published a special issue celebrating the recognized articles.

Legalised prostitution increases human trafficking

Countries where prostitution is legal experience larger reported inflows of human trafficking, according to new research by Prof. Eric Neumayer of the LSE.

Research on human trafficking is growing as the seriousness of the problem becomes more apparent. It is thought to be second only to drug trafficking as the most profitable illegal industry. Read more.
