Vassilis is an Associate Professor of Political Economy at the LSE European Institute. He is also affiliated to LSE's Hellenic Observatory, the Department of Geography and Environment and the ESRC Spatial Economics Research Centre. He is Director of the LSE Research Unit on Southeast Europe (LSEE), Co-editor of Spatial Economic Analysis (Taylor & Francis), Committee Member of the British and Irish Section of the Regional science Association International and member of various professional associations and editorial boards.

An economist and economic geographer by training, Vassilis holds a PhD in Economic Geography (2002, London School of Economics, UK) an MSc in Economics (1996, University of Macedonia, Thessaloniki, Greece) and a BSc in Economics (1994, Aristotle University, Thessaloniki, Greece). His research spans across three disciplinary areas, namely Economics, Geography and Political Economy. His main research interests are on regional and national labour markets; regional and local socio-economic disparities; labour market flexibility and labour relations; macroeconomic policy; and the political economy of reform. He has expertise in panel-data econometrics, spatial econometrics, micro-econometrics and applied Geographical Information Systems analysis.

He has published in a range of economics and regional science journals (Journal of Regional Science, Regional Studies, Urban Studies, Spatial Economic Analysis, the Cambridge Journal of Regions, Economy and Society, Oxford Economics Papers, Empirical Economics, the British Journal of Industrial Relations, the Review of Development Economics, and others) and received various distinctions including the Moss Maden Medal in Regional Science (2008) and a European Investment Bank Award (2001).

He has worked in various projects for the European Commission (DG Regio, DG Enlargement) and the UK Government (ODPM, BERR) and has attracted funding from numerous funding bodies, including the Economic and Social Research Council, the Royal Geographical Society, and the European Commission.
