Carwyn grew up in rural Devon, England, but eschewed a career as a Funeral Director and left to volunteer in China as soon as he finished secondary school, wanderlust and dissatisfaction with rural British life driving him forward. He ended up staying in China, initially for four years, in Gansu and Xi'an, before studying BA Chinese and International Relations at the University of Leeds, which included a year abroad in Beijing at Capital Normal University, where he got heavily involved in the Chinese underground music scene.
He completed his Master's in the LSE Anthropology Department, on the course MSc China in Comparative Perspective, where his dissertation was on the educational attainment of 'left behind children' in China, Mexico and the Philippines. Following on from this he worked as a Research Assistant at the LSE Asia Research Centre, and then as a Brand Strategist and Research Assistant with Flamingo, a cultural consultancy, in Shanghai.
