European experience and lessons for the UK
4 December 2008
LSE London hosted a seminar that focused on transferable examples of social housing from other European countries to the UK as part of the HEIF4 programme of knowledge exchange.
Many European countries have an increasing interest in new initiatives both with respect to investment and the opportunities for tenants. Thus, the timing of the seminar was particularly apposite given the government's stated intention to undertake major reforms in the social rented sector in England.
The roundtables were led by Anthony Mayer and incorporated housing experts from France, Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Sweden and the UK. Speakers drew out important trends, tensions, opportunities and lessons relevant to the UK. Presenters included:
-
Kath Scanlon, LSE London
-
Christine Whitehead, LSE
-
Jean Pierre Schaeffer, Caisse de Depôts, Paris
-
Frank Wassenburg, OTB Delft
-
Christophe Reinprecht, University of Vienna
-
Claire Levy Vroelant, University of Paris 10
-
Christiane Droste, Urban Plus Berlin
-
Lena Magnussen, University of Uppsala
-
Mark Stephens, University of York
Presentations and round-tables were followed by participant questions and discussion. The seminar concluded with the launch of the new LSE London book: "Social Housing II: A review of national and EU policies and outcomes"|, edited by Kathleen Scanlon and Christine Whitehead.
This event was supported by the HEIF 4 Bid Fund.
