Coping with austerity: London after October 20th

A debate

4 November 2010

The national government's Comprehensive Spending Review announced on October 20th 2010 heralds significant changes for the economic, political and social contexts of London. It is within this context that LSE London launched its latest publication entitled 'London: Coping with Austerity'.  The book highlights the way major players in London - including the Mayor, local councils and communities -are seeking to work together to meet the capital's employment, housing and transport requirements. It includes chapters on the relationship between the London boroughs and the Mayor of London, transport, the legacy of the Olympics, how the housing market has fared in the financial crisis and the challenges facing social housing,.

This event brought together  leading policy-makers with individual authors of some of the book's chapters in order to situate London's economic, political and social circumstances- as expressed in the publication's findings-  in relation to the recently announced CSR.

Chaired by Tony Travers, the event began with a talk by London Council's Chief Executive, John O'Brien on the effects of the recession on London boroughs.  It continued with three of the book's authors - Michael Edwards, Christine Whitehead and Kath Scanlon- detailing the findings of their research. There was ample time for questions and debate by the large audience, followed by a drinks reception.
