Transforming London's public services

2 March 2010

Delivering more and better services, without increasing burdens on the taxpayer, is expected to bring a significant and collective shift in the approach to public service delivery. The Government, local authorities and the third sector will all be under pressure to find a means to deliver on this challenge. London's unique position in terms of its size, demographics and governance arrangements provides an opportunity to consider issues and potential solutions from a broad perspective.

It is within this context that LSE London and the Government Office for London jointly hosted a half-day event to explore these issues on 2 March at 1 Whitehall Place.

Chaired by LSE London's Tony Travers, the event drew together senior stakeholders from London local authorities, local and regional public service delivery partners, pan-London organisations and Whitehall departments to look at the opportunities which collaboration within boroughs and across the capital can offer.

The Government Office for London produced a document, included in the contents section of this page, entitled 'Transforming London's Public Services', which set the framework for a number of the key issues discussed during the morning.

The audience was able to engage in debate and network through: a questions and answer session, live individual 'feedback' filtered through wireless computers on each table, and in breakfast and lunch breaks before and after the event.
