It is now twenty years since the 1988 Act introduced the mixed funding regime for housing association finance. For the first few years, LSE London ran an annual seminar at LSE bringing together the major stakeholders to discuss how the market was developing in a neutral environment. It only ceased when the social housing finance market appeared to have matured and to be fully integrated into the more general financial system.
Considering the far more difficult financial and economic world we are facing today, where the market for private finance for social housing may also be reshaped, LSE London organised this important seminar to examine the effectiveness of the private finance approach to funding social housing.
The core objective of the forum was to provide a fruitful discussion at the highest level, so that every participant would contribute a particular knowledge and perspective to the debate at hand. Consequently, the roundtable format of the event brought together leading professionals from all the major stakeholder groups. It was chaired by Professor Willem Buiter who offered a unique understanding of the current financial and economic climate. With the support of HEIF 4, an introductory report was written and presented by Christine Whitehead and Peter Williams. The event concluded with an informal drinks reception.
This event was supported by the HEIF 4 Bid Fund.
