The Thames Gateway: building a new city within an old one?

15 April 2008

There has been much debate in recent years about the future of east London and the area beyond the city's eastern boundary. Some infrastructure has been put in place and some housing built. But the project is still in a developmental stage. The area is large and timescales will be long.

Having brought together a number of the key players in the area's future, this seminar was intended to explore the current situation, clarify opportunities and constraints and consider how further progress can be achieved. The session was chaired by Christine Whitehead, Professor of Housing Economics at LSE, and the speakers included:

  • Lorraine Baldry, Chairman, London Thames Gateway Development Corporation
  • Sir Bob Kerslake, Chief Executive, Homes and Communities Agency
  • Eric Sorensen, Chief Executive, London Thames Gateway Partnership
  • Paul Hudson, Director of Delivery, Thames Gateway Executive

Questions and debate followed each speaker, and the seminar finished with a drinks reception.
