Roundtable on Paris - London economies and their governance

23 June 2008

London's success over recent years has piqued both substantial interest and active competitive responses in Paris. In London, on the other hand, attention has been heavily focused on New York or simple league-table positions with too little attention to what can be learned from London's much closer French counterpart, which does out-perform London in some respects. This roundtable was intended to address the lack of attention dedicated to current developments in the Paris economy in relation to their implications for London and the lessons of London experience.

The session was chaired by Christine Whitehead, Professor of Housing Economics at LSE, and featured three leading experts from Paris:

  • Frédéric Gilli, Sciences Po
  • Jean-Claude Prager, Director, Agency for the Diffusion of Technological Information
  • Christian Lefèvre, Professor of Planning and Political Science, University of Paris and the French Institute of Urban Affairs

Senior researchers from LSE London responded briefly to each of these experts with points of comparison from a London perspective, as leads in to open discussion among participants from the London policy and business communities.
