The fourth evidence gathering session of the Commission focuses on Gender and Media/Culture:
-
On Friday 24 April 2015
-
Session Lead – Dr Sadie Wearing
The Commission will consider the ways in which gender debate is currently represented in UK media. We will draw on existing research to consider the multiple mechanisms that constrain representations, reifying existing norms and curtailing full participation in public and cultural life. Questions the commission will consider will include qualitative exploration of the ways that news media frame and report on ‘Women’s issues’ including questions of care, women in politics, and sexual violence. It will also consider the ways that gender debate is framed across a range of diverse media sites including television drama, advertising, and celebrity culture.
The Commission will focus on the ways that different groups of women are targeted and excluded from media representations in relation to ability, age, class, race and sexuality. In gathering evidence in relation to these four key themes attention will be given to cross cutting concerns including violence, work -life balance, rights and power, and the failure of legislation to deal with pay and discrimination.
