Event Poster
Amidst the economic crisis in Greece, something unusual emerged in Thessaloniki, the idiosyncratic “co-Capital” of the country. Under the mayorship of Yiannis Boutaris, the first non-political figure to be elected as Mayor in the city’s modern history, the city started to re-invent itself, beginning from its very own mode of governance – leading to descriptions of Thessaloniki as a “beacon of hope” and “model for all Greece”. In this lecture, the Mayor of Thessaloniki, decorated by CityMayors as world’s ‘Mayor of the Month’ for October 2012, will talk about [the challenges of administrative modernisation and] the necessary institutional changes Greece needs to accomplish at the level of local administration so as to accommodate the principle of subsidiarity. He will also describe his own efforts for the socio-economic renewal of the city within the national context of economic crisis and political instability.
