The 2003 HO Annual Lecture

European Integration: What is at stake now (for British, Greeks and others)?

2 June 2003

                                                    Professor George Alofoskoufis
Former Minister of Economy & Finance, Greece

The 5th Annual Lecture of the Hellenic Observatory was given by Professor George Alogoskoufis on June 2, 2003. The title of his lecture was ‘ Surviving EMU: prospects for the Greek economy’.

Professor Alogoskoufis is himself an alumnus of the LSE, having obtained an MSc and a PhD in economics from the School. He subsequently became a Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) and Reader in Economics at Birkbeck College. He has written widely on macro-economics, and monetary policy in particular. He is now Professor of Economics at the University of Athens.

Professor Alogoskoufis spoke, not only as a major academic authority, but also as the chief economic policy spokesman of Nea Dimokratia, the main opposition party in Greece. A well-informed discussion was followed by an official dinner.
