R405, Lionel Robbins Building, LSE

Speaker Athanasios Orphanides, Former Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus
Chair David Marsh, Chairman and co-founder of OMFIF

Dr Athanasios Orphanides gave a public lecture, jointly organised by the Financial Markets Group and the Hellenic Observatory, at the LSE on Wednesday 15 May 2013. The title of his talk was 'The politics of the euro area crisis and Cyprus’.

Dr Orphanides was Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus from 2007-12 and, following Cyprus’ entry into the euro-zone in 2008, was a member of the European Central Bank’s Governing Council. He oversaw Cyprus’ adoption of the new currency.

In the lecture, Dr Orphanides identified what he saw as the weaknesses of the euro regime; the vulnerabilities of the Cyprus economy; and, the failings of domestic adjustment in the face of the looming crisis. The lecture was chaired by David Marsh and an extended discussion followed.
