In a lively exchange of views, Professor Charles Goodhart (Emeritus Professor of Banking & Finance; Director, Financial Regulation Research Programme, LSE) argued that the Greek situation was somewhat akin to a frog being scolded in hot water, but that to get out (of the euro) would be even worse.
Dr Daniel Gros (Director, Centre for European Policy Studies, Brussels) argued that the depth of recession and a crisis exit depends on export growth. Indeed, the underlying problem for Greece was ‘an extraordinarily bad export performance’, worse than that achieved by other bailout countries (presentation).
Professor Michael Haliassos (Chair for Macroeconomics and Finance, Goethe University Frankfurt; Director, Center for Financial Studies, Frankfurt) reviewed the strategic options for the euro-zone in relation to Greece and argued that there should be a shift of focus from ‘who pays?’ to ‘who earns?’. That is, it is in the interests of both Greece and her partners that the strategy should be one of boosting her productive and export potential (presentation).
The panellists answered questions from the audience and a reception with participants followed.
