Catalonia at the Crossroads
Speaker: Salvador Giner (President, Institut d'Estudis Catalans)
Chair: Prof. Paul Preston
Time: 18 h.
Place: LSE, Portugal Street, Cowdray House, 1st floor, Seminar Room 1.11
Catalonia today deserves close attention for any observer interested in the challenges that confront most European societies in the early 21st century. A small stateless nation within the Kingdom of Spain, Catalonia combines the strongest sense of history, tradition, language and ethnic identity with the characteristics of a forward-looking, cosmopolitan, industrial, and technologically advanced society. The prospects of the country today will be considered from the perspective of the 'tradition of modernity' which has throughout history been its hallmark. The current political, economic and cultural situation will be looked at by taking into account the 'constants' that have shaped and still continue to shape the nation and the dilemmas of the Catalan people.
