LSE Hellenic Observatory: National Bank of Greece
Call for Research Project Proposals

In 2013 the Hellenic Observatory invited researchers with a recognised interest in contemporary Greece to submit an application for funding, in order to carry out a project on one of the following themes (1) Reform of Public Administration in Greece; (2) Social Insurance Provisions in Greece; (3) Foreign Policy.

The Call was open to all researchers with a university affiliation, who already held a doctorate (PhD degree) and had at least two years of post-doctoral research experience. Applications from groups of researchers were also eligible. The call was made possible by funding generously provided by the National Bank of Greece, to which we wish to record our gratitude. This initiative is consistent with the Observatory’s mission to promote public policy research and to foster academic collaboration and networks and follows on from previous successful calls made in 2009 and 2011.

The HO received a large number of competitive applications, but could only award one grant of GBP £10,000 to each of the thematic areas. Following on from the selection process the HO are now very pleased to announce the three successful research projects: 

  • THEME 1 - REFORM OF PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION IN GREECE
    Project title: Evaluating Structural Reform of Central Government Departments in Greece: Application of the DEA Methodology
    Researchers: Makrydemetres Anthony, Zervopoulos Panagiotis, Pravita Maria-Iliana
  • THEME 2 - SOCIAL INSURANCE PROVISIONS IN GREECE
    Project title: Caring for the Homeless and the Poor in Greece: Implications for the Future of Social Protection and Social Inclusion
    Researchers: Arapoglou Vassilis, Gounis Kostas
  • THEME 3 - FOREIGN POLICY
    Project title: National role perceptions and foreign policy orientation: the ideational bases of Greek political elite’s perception and policy towards Turkey
    Researchers: Ifantis Kostas, Triantaphyllou Dimitrios

LSEE Research Workshop 'Health Reforms' in Southeastern Europe

The LSEE Research Conference explored the implementation of regional development and decentralisation policies in South East Europe. It examined how these policies interact and evaluate their effectiveness in different political and institutional environments. Are these policies strengthening the process of Europeanisation or do they run the risk of deepening localisation and fragmentation of the political and economic systems? The conference sought to address these issues with a focus on South East Europe.

 

LSEE Research Conference on
'Regional Policy and Decentralisation in South East Europe'

This conference explored the implementation of regional development and decentralisation policies in South East Europe, the interaction between them, and their effectiveness in different political and institutional environments. Will these policies contribute to strengthening the ongoing process of Europeanisation, or might they rather deepen localisation and fragmentation of political and economic systems? Participants addressed these issues with a focus on South East Europe. 

This Conference was organised in collaboration with IMO, Zagreb and Friedrich Ebert-Stiftung and with the support from the National Bank of Greece.

 

Workshop on Europeanisation and Enlargement

This Workshop brought together scholars of political science, political economy and international relations, with the aim to extend and update existing research on the varied experiences of Europeanisation and EU enlargement among the countries of South East Europe.

The Workshop was jointly organised by: LSEE, Research on South Eastern Europe and The Center for European Studies, National School of Political Studies and Public Administration, Bucharest.

Implications for quality, reliability, efficiency and equity

Mapping Energy Poverty in South East Europe: Status Quo and Policy Options

The South East Europe Program of L'Institut français des relations internationales (Ifri) and LSEE invite researchers with a recognised interest in contemporary South East Europe to submit an application for funding in order to carry out a project on the following theme: "Mapping Energy Poverty in South East Europe: Status Quo and Policy Options".

The Call is open to all researchers with a University affiliation, Master minimum or comparative research experience. Researchers should come from the region of South East Europe: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Kosovo, Greece as well as Moldova.
