On 26 March 2012, LSEE, in conjunction with the Department for Social Policy, hosted a public lecture by Edi Rama, the current leader of the Socialist Party and the former Mayor of Tirana.
Speaking to a large audience of students and members of the Albanian community in London, he outlined what he saw as the key priorities for Albania. He also noted that he was seeking to learn how other countries had approached key policy issues and that during his trip to Britain he had met with a number of leading figures from the British Labour Party.
At the end of his presentation, there was a lengthy, and spirited, question and answer session. As well as questions about healthcare reform, a major project in the country, he was asked about the measures that he would introduce to reform the tax system and tackle the problem of corruption.
Although the debate was dominated by domestic matters, there were also a few questions on foreign policy, including Kosovo.
