  • Dr Vassilis Monastiriotis spoke at a workshop organised by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre in Ispra, Italy, on the theme “The role of human capital and innovation in territorial impact assessment”, 5 December 2016.
  • Dr Vassilis Monastiriotis gave a webinar for the synpraksis (syn*πραξις) network titled “Depressing wages – wage reforms and adjustments in Greece and their logic”, 30 November 2016.
  • Dr Vassilis Monastiriotis presented a paper titled “Spatial structure and distributional dynamics of regional incomes in Greece” (co-authored with Can Karahasan) at the Regional Studies Association Winter Conference (London), 25 November 2016.

  • Dr Will Bartlett gave a key-note address at a conference in Belgrade on "Fiscal decentralisation and local government financing in Serbia”. The conference is organised under the auspices of the RRPP Regional Research Promotion Programme and took place between 29 and 30 September 2016.
  • Dr Iva Tomić will give a presentation at the 20th EBES Conference in Vienna on “Youth Unemployment in Croatia: Who is More Exposed to the Risk of Unemployment at a Young Age?”, 28-30 September 2016.
  • Dr James Ker-Lindsay spoke at a conference on Radicalisation and Nationalism in the Western Balkans organised by the Aspen Institute, Germany, 5-8 September, 2016.
  • Dr Vassilis Monastiriotis presented a paper at the 19th Uddevalla Symposium 2016 on "Geography, Open Innovation, Diversity and Entrepreneurship" (30 June – 2 July, Birkbeck, University of London). The paper is co-authored with Dr Jacob Jordaan (Utrecht) and is titled “Drivers of Regional FDI Spillovers in Greece: an empirical examination of the effects of the technology gap and agglomeration”, 30 June 2016.

  • Dr Vassilis Monastiriotis presented a paper titled “The Achievements of Cohesion Policy: long-period evidence on the factors conditioning success and failure from 15 selected regions” (co-authored with R Crescenzi and U Fratesi) at a policy conference in Brussels organised by the RSA Research Network on Cohesion Policy (Institut d’Etudes européennes de l’Université Libre de Bruxelles – ULB), 13 June 2016.
  • Dr Vassilis Monastiriotis gave a keynote speech at the Albanian Studies Days conference in Tirana, Albania, organised by the European University of Tirana, 29-30 April 2016.
  • Dr Will Bartlett attended a Conference in Tirana organised by the EUT and presented a paper on “Higher education provision and labour market opportunities in Albania”, 30 April 2016.
  • Dr Will Bartlett spoke at a Conference in Germany (University of Emden-Leer “The Transition towards the EU: Recent Social and Economic Developments in West Balkan countries” and he presented a paper on "Economic reforms and EU accession: the case of Serbia", 26 April 2016.

  • Dr Vassilis Monastiriotis spoke as a panellist at the Annual Conference of the Euro-Mediterranean Forum of Institutes of Economic Sciences (FEMISE) in Athens, on the theme “The pros and cons of ‘deeper association’: conditionality leverage, intra-regional integration and economic development”, 13-14 February 2016.
  • Dr James Ker-Lindsay gave a guest lecture on current and emerging security challenges in the Western Balkans at the Royal College of Defence Studies, 3 February 2016.
  • Tena Prelec presented the outcomes of the research: 'UAE Policies towards the Western Balkans: Investment Motives and Impact' during the conference 'Europe and Asia: Economic Integration Prospects' at the Belgrade Banking Academy in Belgrade, Serbia. The paper was written by Will Bartlett, James Ker-Lindsay, Kristian Alexander (of Zayed University) and Tena Prelec - and the research project was funded by the LSE Middle East Centre, 25 January 2016.

The title of the paper is “Happiness and Religion” and it will be presented in a special session called “Institutions and Well-Being” - Link Dr Tunali will also discuss a paper written by Daniel L.   • Dr Dimitar Bechev spoke on a panel on Regional Co-operation in the Western Balkans, taking place in the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia in Belgrade.   • Serbia-Kosovo: What Role for Civil Society in Normalizing Relations Balkan Trust for Democracy conference 30 March 2015 - Belgrade, Serbia Dr Joanna Hanson was moderator.

  • Research Project on Fiscal Decentralisation in Serbia and Montenegro Funded through the RRPP (Regional Research Promotion Programme) 23 February - 9 March 2015, Belgrade Dr Will Bartlett will be doing field work on the research project.
  • Dr Joanna Hanson  was in Kosovo, doing work on the normalisation process and civil society. She co-organised and co-chaired a round table with the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN) where civic-society participants looked at how to better formulate specific issues related to the normalisation process. 28 January - 20 February 2015, Kosovo.
