Iceland's Road to Recovery - Key Lessons

In her lecture, Iceland's Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade Lilja Alfreðsdóttir will focus on the decisive steps that the Government of Iceland has taken in tackling the substantial challenges caused by the unprecedented economic collapse of the Icelandic economy in 2008. As one of the first casualties in the storm that engulfed the international economy in 2008, Iceland’s road to recovery from the financial crisis has been a considerable success story marked by a combination of extraordinary measures, sound long-term economic policies and successful cooperation with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The Government of Iceland is currently implementing the final stages of its plan to restore and grow the country’s economy, resulting in increased stability, job creation, inward foreign investment and steady, manageable growth rates. Critical to the finalisation of the recovery plan is the implementation of an appropriate and effective process to lift capital controls which were imposed in 2008 to stabilise the economy. This process is focused on prioritising fair and transparent treatment of all those affected and to encourage long-term investment in Iceland and economic stability. In the lecture, Foreign Minister Alfreðsdóttir will argue that Iceland's rapid recovery provides some key lessons for the international economy.

Lilja Alfreðsdóttir (@liljaalfreds) is Iceland's Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade.

Before her appointment as Minister for Foreign Affairs in April 2016, Ms Alfreðsdóttir served as Deputy Director of the Central Bank of Iceland’s General Secretariat and International Affairs Department. Since her graduation from Columbia University, Alfreðsdóttir has been a central banker, apart from temporary secondments to Iceland’s Prime Minister’s Office as a Special Liaison and previously, to the International Monetary Fund’s Nordic-Baltic Executive Office as an Advisor.

Ms. Alfreðsdóttir holds a Master’s degree in International Economic Policy from Columbia University and received a Fulbright grant during her studies. She holds an undergraduate degree in Political Science from the University of Iceland. At the Central Bank and in previous positions, Lilja has focused her career on international economic affairs and domestic policy making.

Kevin Featherstone is Head of the European Institute, Eleftherios Venizelos Professor of Contemporary Greek Studies and Professor of European Politics at LSE.

EU and Brexit

At this lecture, Martin Schulz will stress that although the UK and the EU will be setting off on different ways, cooperation must remain strong. There must be no looking back in anger. The EP's President will also establish some basic markers regarding the next steps. He will argue that just as it is important to draw the lessons from the referendum result, it is equally important to avoid simplistic diagnoses.

Martin Schulz (@EP_President) is President of the European Parliament. He was born in 1955 and grew up in Hehlrath Germany. Aged 31, he was elected as the youngest mayor of North Rhine-Westphalia. Since 1994, Martin Schulz has been a Member of the European Parliament. In 2004 he was elected group leader of the Socialists and Democrats. He has been President of the European Parliament since 2012. On 1 July 2014 he was re-elected President, becoming the first President in the history of the European Parliament to be re-elected for a second term.

Kevin Featherstone is Head of the European Institute, Eleftherios Venizelos Professor of Contemporary Greek Studies and Professor of European Politics at LSE.

Britain after Brexit: will something continue to turn up?

David Smith has been Economics Editor of The Sunday Times since 1989. He has written a number of books, including The Rise and Fall of Monetarism, From Boom to Bust, Will Europe Work?, The Age of Instability, Free Lunch and, most recently, Something Will Turn Up.

Kevin Featherstone is Head of the European Institute, Eleftherios Venizelos Professor of Contemporary Greek Studies and Professor of European Politics at LSE.

This event is part of LSE's 'After BREXIT: the future of the UK in Europe' series. An exploration of the issues raised by the UK’s vote to leave the European Union through lectures, panel discussions and debates. The series will cover the broad range of political, economic, legal, and social issues as preparations for the negotiations on ‘BREXIT’ are underway. ‘BREXIT’ represents an unprecedented agenda for Europe and an historical milestone for the British state: as such, the need for informed debate is paramount.

LSE European Institute 25th Anniversary Alumni Reunion
