Dr Martin W Bauer
Biography
I was educated in Psychology and Economic History [Lic. Phil. Hist. Bern & Zurich] and Social Psychology [PhD, LSE]. A former Research Fellow in 'Public Understanding of Science' [Science Museum London] I was academic visitor to the Maison Des Sciences de l'Homme and SciencePo (Paris) and teach regularly in Brazil (UFRGS & PUC-RS, Porto Alegre).
I joined the LSE staff in September 1994 where I am closely involved with Social Psychology, the Methodology Insitute and BIOS. Currently directing the MSc programme Social and Public Communication, I convene several option courses: PS439 Science, Technology and Resistance; Mi454 Qualitative Research: Interview, Text and Image, and contribute to others (PS400, PS404, PS410, PS429, Mi453, BIOS).
Research interests and selected publications
My research is on science and technology in the public sphere (STEPS): resistance in social processes, social representations, attitudes to science and technology, in particular modern biotechnology. The key question of the STEPS group is: how does Public Opinion impact socio-technical developments? STEPS hosts the monthly London Public Understanding of Science Seminar.
I retain an active interest in 'Work & Organisation including job design, emotion, and stress, action theory, resistance & organisational learning, and in Methodology with issues of case study research, content analysis, corpus construction, computer-assisted text analysis, and continuous observation.
Recent funded projects include:

- Perceptions of BSE/CJD risk 1985-1999 [funding: WHO/EC 1999-2002],
- Science in the British Press, 1946-1995 [funding: Wellcome Trust / Science Museum].
