Pro bono opportunities for LSE Department of Law students
Thank you for your interest in volunteering in Pro Bono work. There are a number of ongoing pro bono projects which LSE Law students are, or have been, involved in. These include the following:
Royal Courts of Justice: Personal Support Unit
This is a charity based at the Royal Courts of Justice and the Principal Registry of the Family Division. Its service supports litigants without lawyers, their family members and people with special needs. LSE students have volunteered in the past at the PSU and further opportunities will be advertised in the future.
Legal Advice Clinics
Currently over 30 LSE Law students participate in four pro bono legal advice clinics run across London by a number of City law firms. The students' experiences at these centres has been extremely positive, with participants reporting the benefits of seeing law in action in the community, working alongside lawyers and trainees and assisting with the provision of these much needed legal services. These positions are advertised in October of each academic year.
Pro bono assistance for charities
Pro bono opportunities also arise from time to time in legal charities; recently the Prisoners' Advice Service advertised for LSE Law students to apply to undertake pro bono work supporting its services to prisoners. Further opportunities will be advertised below throughout the year as they arise. Alternatively, if you are aware of a charity which requires assistance, please get in touch with Dr Jo Braithwaite, Bradley Barlow or Livia Ottisova.
Student-led pro bono schemes
LSE Law students have been active in setting up pro bono activities themselves, such as the ongoing StreetLaw project. The LawWorks website is an excellent resource for students considering this - visit Useful Links for more information. Interested students should also make contact with the LLB or LLM Pro Bono Officer, as appropriate.
Current pro bono vacancies
This section will be updated as vacancies arise. In the meantime, please check the opportunities available on the LSE Volunteer Centre website, or contact Dr Jo Braithwaite or your LLB/LLM pro bono officer if you have ideas for new pro bono activities.
