Types of impact in Law

There are many and varied types of impact that can occur as a result of the research that is undertaken by academic staff in the Law department. Although much research impact in this academic field involves the reform of legislation at both a national and European level, the table below illustrates the wide-ranging nature of other potential impacts that can occur:

  • Access to justice and other opportunities (including employment and education)

  • Decisions by a public service or regulatory authority

  • Human development activity or outcomes

  • Human rights activity or outcomes

  • Humanitarian action and relief

  • International development

  • Law enforcement

  • Legal and other frameworks

  • Monitoring of development and humanitarian action

  • Social welfare, equality and inclusion

  • Understanding of standards of wellbeing and human rights

  • Capacity to fulfil treaty or reporting obligations (e.g. through provision of data or legislative change)

  • Ethical standards

  • International guidelines or policy (governmental and non-governmental)

  • Legislative change, development of legal principle or effect on legal practice

  • National, regional or local guidelines or policy (governmental and non-governmental)

  • Political and legislative processes
