Essential freeware and software

This page contains links to a select list of Windows freeware and (cheap) shareware. This is only a tiny selection of what is available. There are many sites on the web with links to a vast range of free downloads. Try tucows or ZDNet.

  • Open Source Living - an archive of Open Source software, applications and references
     
  • Firefox - the open source alternative to Internet Explorer with many add-ons and extensions
     
  • EasyApps Icon Software - extract and edit icons

  • IrfanView is a free (for non-commercial use) graphics viewer and editor. Handles all common formats and produces slide shows (also has a Hex viewer if you need one)

  • Screen Ruler - essential for sizing web graphics and tables

  • WinZip - the de facto standard tool for compressing and uncompressing files
     
  • 7-Zip - an alternative to WinZip that also handles RAR archives

  • WinAmp - play all audio files, free

  • IPSwitch - easy to use and powerful FTP client, free for students and education staff

  • Xenu's Link Sleuth - no more broken links, free
