Information Systems Research Forum

On Intellectual Craftsmanship in Information Systems Studies

Leslie Willcocks
Professor and Head of Group, ISIG LSE

Thursday 16 October 2008 1230 - 1400.

New Academic Building, Alumni Theatre, LG.09

Information systems studies are highly fond of rigour and methodologies but rarely speak, let alone write about intellectual craftsmanship. But do information systems researchers neither value nor practice intellectual craftsmanship? In this session we will talk about the dimensions of such craftsmanship, and the all too tacit, often disguised practices that need to be accomplished in order to produce high quality research. Leslie will refer to his own research studies and publications, and will draw upon C. Wright Mills and others to demonstrate the qualities and practices being referred to and the case for how fundamental but relatively neglected, at best tacit, craftsmanship is in our work.

If you are a visitor from outside LSE, please send a confirmation to c.m.bonina@lse.ac.uk. You will need to sign in at the reception desk of the New Academic Building. Please note places will be available on a first-come-first-serve basis - registration is not required for LSE students and staff.
