Mobile communication technologies have developed and diffused rapidly over the last couple of decades. The capacity of the networks is increasing, mobile phones are becoming powerful computers and 3G infrastructures offer many Internet or Internet like services. This presentation will present some examples of emerging infrastructures delivering Internet like services to mobile phones like the Japanese i-mode and the Norwegian CPA platform and compare these infrastructures to the Internet. The presentation will in particular focus on to what extent the mobile platforms enable the same broad range of innovative activities as we have seen within the Internet domain the last couple of decades. This will be discussed drawing upon the concepts of end-to-end architecture, programmability of terminals and the more general concept of generativity. The presentation will also discuss how features of the technological architectures of the infrastructures may influence the evolution of the mobile internet and whether it will be industrialized in the same way as previous media like newspapers and radio
