The IT outsourcing market has been expanding rapidly for fifteen years, more recently moving into business process and offshore variants. This paper critiques the academic literature on this phenomenon. It then reviews the authors' own research and finds that learning has been very slow amongst organizations, and that few have caught up with the knowledge implications of outsourcing. The paper distills the learning so far into analysing total and selective outsourcing experiences, and the many market options available, what organizations have learned about crafting outsourcing relationships, and the core capabilities needed by clients and suppliers to render outsourcing relationships effective in business terms.
