During your time at LSE you will encounter jargon, acronyms and terms in our publications and website that are unfamiliar, and which vary to those used in other institutions. Therefore, please use the list below to aid your understanding.
Academic Advisor
|
An academic member of staff appointed to each student at the start of the year. Usually the first point of contact for any problems, whether academic, personal, or administrative. |
ASP
|
The ISI Group uses a web based system (the ASP pages) for many of the straightforward activities like signing up for classes, seeing who your personal tutor is etc. |
Auditing
|
If you choose to audit a course, this means that you can sit in on the lectures but do not undertake any assessment for that course. Courses that you have audited will not appear on your final transcript, and will not count towards your degree. |
Calendar
|
The Calendar is a web resource which contains definitive regulations relating to students and their study. It can be found at: http://www.lse.ac.uk/resources/calendar/
|
Class
|
This is small group teaching and normally the focus is on problems and issues associated with the lectures. Typically a class has one teacher and around fifteen students. |
Convenor
|
Head of academic department, institute or group. From 2006/7 re-named 'Head of Department or Group'. |
Course
|
Sometimes referred to as 'module', meaning the individual components of a programme of study e.g. IS470 |
Course Tutor
|
An academic member of staff who has overall responsibility for a course, such as the MSc ADMIS. |
Course Guide
|
A brief description of each course offered at LSE, published in the Calendar. |
Course Outline
|
Detailed document describing course content, readings and details of assessment. Available on the website and/or Moodle. |
Dissertation
|
Also known as 'thesis' or 'research report', it is a compulsory one unit course which consists of an independent quantitative or qualitative investigation of an issue in the field of Information Systems and Innovations. |
DoM
|
Department of Management |
Grade
|
Used interchangeably with 'mark', but note that they can often be 'provisional' until confirmed at the School Exam Board. |
Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA)
|
Usually a PhD student in the final stages of their programme, who provides seminar teaching to accompany a lecture series. |
ISIG
|
Information Systems and Innovation Group, formerly known as the Information Systems Department. |
Head of Department (or Group)
|
Head of an academic department, institute or group. Previously known as 'convenor'. |
Lecture
|
Large group teaching with one lecturer covering material for the whole group taking the course. Normally held weekly. |
Lecturer
|
Usually an academic member of staff at LSE, or a visiting or associated academic. |

|

LT
|
Lent Term, the second term in the academic year. |
Module
|
Another term for 'course', meaning the different components of a programme of study. e.g. IS470 |
Moodle
|
A web-based learning environment, where course materials are available, assignments are submitted and students can communicate with other students and staff. Click here

MT
|
Michaelmas Term, the first term of the academic year. |
NAB
|
New Academic Building, which the ISI Group will be moving into soon. |
Programme
|
The course of study leading to the award of, e.g. MSc in ADMIS, made up of several 'courses' or 'modules'. |
Public Folders
|
An electronic notice board within Outlook used to access and share documents. |
Seminar
|
This is small group teaching where topics and reading material are discussed with a teacher. |
DoM Reeption Desk
|
DoM Reception Desk, this is where ISIG students can submit their assignments, collect handouts and use the dissertation loaning service. Open from 9.30am-5.30pm during term time, based on the third floor of the NAB. |
ST
|
Summer Term, the third term in the academic year. |
Supervisor
|
An academic member of staff appointed to students to supervise their dissertations. Generally separate to the 'Academic Advisor'. |
