The next steps in your PhD application

The PhD admissions procedure and information about our departmental research profile is set out on the PhD programme page, which you should consult in the first instance as it contains information that is relevant for your application. The formal PhD application and admissions process is handled by Graduate Admissions. If you choose to apply, your application documents will include the completed application form, references and transcripts. In addition, we require you to submit a research proposal with your application:

  • The proposal should be of approximately 3,000 words

  • The proposal should include a preliminary title and set of questions based on your identification of the key literature and current debates in the field, and a discussion of your proposed research approach

  • You should describe your motivation for selecting this particular topic for research and state why you think your proposed work will make a significant and original contribution to the field

  • Finally, tell us how you think your research fits into the current research profile of the department and LSE. To do this, please take time to review the academic work of the department. Start by reading about the department's research foci. The Working Papers Series might also be helpful.

Once we have received a formal application from Graduate Admissions, we will review it internally and get back to you regarding our decision. If we need further information from you, we will get in touch with you directly.

Supervisors for successful applicants are assigned by the department accordingly to suitability and staff workload. We would be grateful if you would allow us to filter your communications with individual members of staff regarding PhD admissions, and certainly ask you not to make multiple contacts within the department. We therefore ask that all future emails should be addressed to isphdadmissions@lse.ac.uk. If there is any issue regarding the content of your research proposal we will put you in contact with the appropriate member of academic staff best able to discuss it with you.

Next steps...if you have not already done so, please access LSE's general Graduate Admissions information. We emphasise the importance of taking the time to review the academic work of the department. Please also read through Applying for an Information Systems PhD. Finally, we are happy to answer any specific questions that you have which are not covered by the material we have made available to you on our website. Email isphdadmissions@lse.ac.uk.
